Burma Bazaar, Moore Market and Park Town: Who Is Who

Park Town is the area around Chennai Central, and Moore Market Complex is the suburban terminus next to the station. Burma Bazaar is a separate market at Parrys Corner by Chennai Beach station. Buy electronics from shops that give a bill and warranty, because Burma Bazaar has been described as a grey market.
Where is Park Town?
Park Town is the neighbourhood around Chennai Central railway station, and Wikipedia places the station in the Periamet area with its main entrance on Poonamallee High Road. It is also where you find Park Town MRTS station, Chennai Park suburban station and Central metro. Many of Chennai's historic public buildings, including Ripon Building and Victoria Public Hall, are in the same area.
For a visitor, Park Town means transport, wholesale trade and heavy street traffic. It is not a place to browse slowly with luggage, so pass through it with a plan.
What was Moore Market?
Moore Market was an Indo-Saracenic market building completed in 1900. Wikipedia says it was destroyed in a fire on 30 May 1985, after which the land passed to the railways. The Moore Market Complex that opened in 1986 is a 13-storey building that houses the suburban terminus for four lines, with platforms numbered 12 to 16, along with reservation counters and offices.
So today, when someone says Moore Market, they usually mean the suburban station beside Central, not a place to shop for vegetables or books as it once was. If your ticket says Moore Market Complex, you are taking a suburban train and not a long-distance one.
The Victoria Public Hall stands nearby on Poonamallee High Road between Ripon Building and Chennai Central. Wikipedia says it was built between 1886 and 1890 and restored from 2009, and now seats about 600 people. It is a good landmark to tell a driver if you are asking for Park Town.
Ripon Building, completed in 1913 and now the headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation, is another reference point nearby. Both buildings show how this area was the civic heart of old Madras.
What is Burma Bazaar, and where is it?
Burma Bazaar is a market at Parrys Corner in George Town, just outside Chennai Beach railway station. Wikipedia says it was established in 1969 and grew from Tamil refugees who left Myanmar in the early 1960s. It sells electronics, perfumes, media and consumer goods along a road of around a kilometre.
It is not at Chennai Central. From Park Town you need a cab, an auto or a suburban train towards Beach. Please ask the desk for the distance and best route.
What should you know before you shop there?
Be straight with yourself about what the place is. Wikipedia records that the US Trade Representative listed Burma Bazaar as a notorious market from 2009 to 2017 for counterfeit goods and pirated media. It is described as an unorganised or grey market. That does not mean every shop is dishonest, but it does mean you should be careful.
Compare prices before you buy, ask for a proper bill, and test electronics before you leave the shop. For anything expensive, buying from an authorised store with a warranty is safer than hunting for a bargain.
- Carry small notes and keep your phone in a front pocket.
- Ask for a bill and check the model number on the box and device.
- Do not buy anything you cannot test before leaving.
- Go in daylight and avoid carrying heavy luggage.
How do you fit this around a train journey?
If you have a few hours before a train from Central, Park Town is within easy reach, but Burma Bazaar needs a proper trip. Plan a morning with a cab, and keep your luggage at the hotel. Hotel Royal Park offers luggage assistance and cabs, and the hotel is about 10 to 15 minutes from Chennai Central.
If you only want a quick errand in the Park Town area, check opening hours with the shop, because markets have their own weekly closing days and festival holidays. I could not verify market timings.
Be realistic about luggage. Park Town and Parrys Corner are crowded, with narrow pavements and heavy traffic, and a trolley bag is a burden there. If you are passing through on the way to a train, keep your bags small and do your shopping before you collect your luggage from the hotel, not after.
If you are buying gifts, consider alternatives that are easier to carry and less risky than electronics, such as sweets, spices or textiles from established shops. Ask the hotel desk for suggestions of reliable areas close to Anna Salai.
Whatever you decide, keep your phone and wallet secure and watch for sudden crowd movement near station exits at train arrival times.
A short practical plan
Start at the hotel after breakfast, take a cab to the area you need, do your errand and return before the heat of the afternoon. If you need a rest before a late train, ask about hourly booking by calling +91 73059 49923. Rooms start at Rs 1,600 per night, check-in is at 1 PM and check-out at 11 AM. Reconfirm rates when you book.
