Day Trips from Chennai: Tirupati, Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram

Twin Bed room at Hotel Royal Park for friends or colleagues heading out on a day trip
Short answer

From Chennai, Mahabalipuram is about 56 km south, Kanchipuram about 72 km south-west and Tirupati about 150 km north-west. Buses serve Mahabalipuram, and Tirupati has a railway station with free temple buses to Alipiri. Plan a very early start, and use Hotel Royal Park on Anna Salai as a base before or after the trip.

Which trips are practical from Chennai?

Incredible India lists Mahabalipuram, Puducherry, Kanchipuram and Tirupati as nearby destinations from Chennai. Of these, Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram are short enough for a single day. Tirupati is a long day trip or, more realistically, an overnight plan. The figures below come from Wikipedia and are road or approximate distances, so check a current route planner.

Whichever you pick, set off early. Chennai traffic builds fast after 8 AM, and a late start eats the day.

Mahabalipuram is an easy half day if you begin early. Kanchipuram needs a full day if you want to visit more than one temple and shop for silk. Tirupati is best treated as an overnight trip, and for Rameswaram or Madurai see our separate rail planning note.

Think about what you want from the day. A trip packed with six stops tires everyone. One temple, one meal and one shop is plenty, and leaves room for delays on the road.

Also decide how you will return. If you hire a car or take a cab, agree the pickup time and the return plan before you leave Chennai, and carry the hotel's number in case your plans change. The hotel is on +91 73059 49923.

Mahabalipuram, about 56 km south

Wikipedia gives the distance as 56 km from Chennai, along the Coromandel Coast. The monuments date to the 7th and 8th centuries, with the Shore Temple a major sight beside the Bay of Bengal. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, and I could not verify ticket prices or hours, so check on the day.

Wikipedia says MTC and TNSTC operate bus services between Mahabalipuram and Chennai, including deluxe and air-conditioned buses. A taxi is simpler if you have a group or luggage; our front desk can arrange cabs and package tours, so ask what is available.

Kanchipuram, about 72 km south-west

Kanchipuram is known for temples and handloom silk. Wikipedia describes the Kailasanathar Temple as built by the Pallavas, the Ekambareswarar Temple with a 59-metre gateway tower and the Kamakshi Amman Temple. Kanchipuram silk sarees received a Geographical Indication tag in 2005.

Wikipedia says the city is on the Chengalpet to Arakkonam line, with road links to Chennai and Bangalore. If you want to buy silk, take your time, compare shops and ask for a bill. Temple visits depend on timings and dress rules, which vary, so check on the day.

  • Start before 7 AM to beat the traffic.
  • Carry water, sunscreen and a light shawl for temples.
  • Keep cash and ID in a front pocket.
  • Plan lunch in a busy, clean place.

Tirupati, about 150 km north-west

Tirupati is about 150 km from Chennai, according to Wikipedia. It has several railway stations, with Tirupati Main as the principal one, and the temple board runs free buses from the railway station and central bus stand to Alipiri for pilgrims. The Alipiri footpath to Tirumala is 11 km with 3,550 steps, and the Srivari Mettu path is 6 km.

This is a demanding trip. Darshan queues and rules are set by the temple authorities, and I have not verified current booking systems, so read the official temple instructions before you go. For most visitors an overnight stay is more comfortable than a rushed day.

Starting from Chennai Central or Egmore

Long trips start with a station. Check which station your ticket names and allow for the ride. Chennai Central is about 10 to 15 minutes and Egmore about 10 minutes from Hotel Royal Park in normal traffic. If your train is early, stay the night before so you do not start with a stressful rush.

I could not verify which specific trains serve these places and when, so check the current timetable on IRCTC or the Southern Railway app.

For a Mahabalipuram trip, road is simplest. For Kanchipuram, a taxi is flexible if you plan to visit more than one temple. For Tirupati, trains and buses are the common routes, and the temple board's free bus from the railway station to Alipiri is a useful link. Confirm the current details from official sources before you go.

If you return late from a day trip, tell the hotel your expected time so the desk can plan for your arrival. Rates and availability should be reconfirmed, and hourly booking is available on request if you want a place to freshen up before an onward train.

Using the hotel as a base

Return after a long day to a room with air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. Rates start at Rs 1,600 per night, with check-in at 1 PM and check-out at 11 AM. If you arrive from the trip before check-in, or leave early and return late, ask about hourly booking by calling +91 73059 49923. We offer luggage assistance, which helps if you return with shopping. Reconfirm the rate when you book.
