Why does an early flight need a different plan?

A train station is a short ride from Anna Salai. The airport is not. Can you use the metro for a dawn flight?

Probably not for the earliest flights. Wikipedia lists Chennai Metro running from about 5 AM to 11 PM, and the airport station is on the Blue Line. If your flight is before about 8 AM, the first trains may be too late to give you the time you need. Check current timings on the Chennai Metro Rail website, because schedules are revised, and then decide.

If your flight is mid-morning, the metro is a workable choice for one or two light bags and keeps you out of road traffic. For a very early flight, book a cab the evening before and treat the metro as a backup.

What should you do the evening before?

Short, boring preparation beats clever planning. Put all documents and chargers in one place, charge your phone, and make sure the cab time is fixed.

How much margin should you allow?

There is no honest single number, because airlines set their own check-in and bag drop deadlines and these change. Walk to the cab with the driver's number saved, and share your location with someone at home. If rain has started, leave earlier, because Chennai traffic slows quickly when roads are wet.
